Breaking On October 10, 2001 a groundbreaking ceremony was held at the site of the first new student housing to be constructed on the campus in more than 30 years. Construction began on three new apartment buildings early in 2002. Designed by the architectural firm of Howard, Montgomery and Steger, the three new buildings will hold 12 units each, bringing the total number of new apartments to 36. The new student apartments, which will feature double sinks in the kitchen, washer-dryer hookups, and a sprinkler system, will cost around $5 million to complete. This includes $552,000 to prepare the site and another $500,000 for deferred maintenance. Even so, the cost of rent for students will be around $500, which is only about $50 more than the current cost for multi-bedroom student housing. |
